How to Use Coffee Makers
Use
a clean coffee maker.
- Clean your machine, regularly.
- Use only filtered water to brew coffee, and don't leave
the pot sitting on a burner for more than 20 minutes.
- Don't use vinegar to descale your coffee maker—it can
damage the internal stainless steel parts of your machine!
Open
the lid of the coffee maker.
- Open the lid of the coffee maker, being careful not to
burn yourself on any hot surfaces or steam vents.
- Place your grounds in one of the baskets, as noted in
your user guide. If you have a manual drip coffee maker, fill out an order
form with your local roaster and they'll deliver it right to your house so
you don't have to wash out old coffee grounds first thing in the morning!
- Close the lid until it clicks into place and turn on if
necessary. If there is no button, then just press down on top until it
makes a hissing sound like air escaping from a tire that's been left flat
for too long while driving through New York City traffic during rush hour
in August (it takes forever). This means that it's okay now; no need to
panic!
Pour
fresh water into the brew chamber of your Keurig® brewer.
- Pour fresh water into the brew chamber of your Keurig®
brewer. The amount of water you need will vary based on the size of your
brewer, so make sure to check your instruction manual for details.
- Add one K-Cup® pack (or any other brand) and close the
lid securely before pressing "Brew." This will start a brewing
cycle that can take up to 3 minutes depending on how strong you like it!
Lift
the handle to open the brew chamber.
Lift the handle to open the brew
chamber.
This can be done gently; you don’t
need to yank it up as if you were trying to rip off a band-aid. Just pull it up
and open the chamber, then insert your pod (or grounds). The lid will stay off
until you close it again, so there's no need for special care when moving
around with it opened.
Insert
a K-Cup® pod.
Now, insert a K-Cup® pod into the
cavity at the top of the brew chamber. Make sure it’s inserted with its label
facing outward. If your brewer has an auto start feature, you can use it to
begin brewing immediately after inserting a K-Cup® pod.
Close
the brew chamber lid and lower the handle to close it completely.
Now that your coffee maker is ready
to use, you can brew your first cup. Make sure the brew chamber lid is closed
and that the handle is lowered securely into place.
- Make sure everything is in place before brewing (see
above)
- If you’re using a manual drip maker with a glass
carafe, fill it up with enough water so that when it starts to boil up and
over, there will be enough room for all of the hot water to come out
without overflowing.
Place
your favorite mug on the Drip Tray Plate.
The first step is to place your
favorite mug on the Drip Tray Plate.
Before you do this, make sure that
your mug has a flat bottom and straight sides. Do not use a mug that is more
than 5 inches tall.
The coffee maker will automatically
sense the height of the mug and brew just enough coffee for it to fit inside
without spilling over the top edge or being too small for comfort; however, we
recommend using only mugs that are less than 4 inches in diameter at their
widest point (the rim).
Select
either a cup (8 oz.) size or travel mug (16 oz.) size depending on your brewer
model by pressing either Cup or Mug button once.
- Select either a cup (8 oz.) size or travel mug (16 oz.)
size depending on your brewer model by pressing either Cup or Mug button
once.
- Don't overfill your cup, brewer, or water reservoir.
The water level should be between the MIN and MAX fill lines inside the
brew basket.
- Don't overfill your brewers with hot water. Overfilling
can cause overheating, which could result in damage to your machine and/or
injury from hot liquids spewing out of it unexpectedly.
- Also, don't fill up both sides of a dual-side brewer at
once! That's way too much liquid for one cup!
Press
and hold either Cup or Mug button down until your desired cup or mug size is
dispensed into your cup, then release the button.
- Press and hold either Cup or Mug button down until your
desired cup or mug size is dispensed into your cup, then release the
button.
- The coffee maker will automatically stop brewing after
the selected amount of coffee has been dispensed. There are two ways to
know if your brew cycle is over:
- Look at the LCD screen to see if it says
"BREWING" in red and green letters (it will also display elapsed
time since last brew cycle started). If it's still showing nothing but
blue LEDs, keep waiting! You can also check how long each portion of water
takes to heat up by checking out our handy guide on how much water should
go in for each type of coffee maker—and don't forget about decaffeinated
beans!
- Or just wait for it. If you've already pressed a button
before pressing another one, then this process should only take about 20
seconds per cup/mug depending on which button you pushed (and whether
there's any difference between them).
Once
complete, remove your mug from the Drip Tray Plate, enjoy immediately and
discard K-Cup® pod after use.
Now that you have enjoyed the
coffee, it's time to discard the K-Cup® pod. Always make sure to dispose of
used K-Cups responsibly in an appropriate location, such as at a recycling drop
off point or with your regular household waste.
Use a damp paper towel to clean off
any residue from your mug and then place it back onto the drip tray plate in
its holder. The next step is making more coffee!
